Abstract:
The influence of process and machine variables on segregation and cast structure and different approaches to control the segregation and cast structure were reviewed. Steel grades WR-67 and WR-62, cast at different casting conditions, were analyzed for cast structure and chemical heterogeneity.
The results were discussed and it was found that there was no axial segregation, however composition variation from bloom to bloom and billet to billet and spot segregation across the section was observed which was due to non-homogenized liquid steel and also results showed increasing tendency of porosity from surface to center.
As possible remedy, It was recommended that purging practice should be improved and a EMS was suggested to be installed at mold to homogenize liquid steel and reduce porosity area fraction and strict observation of casting conditions prescribed for the plant was advised.
