Summary, etc. Abstract:

The cutting tool is the most critical part of the machining system. For good and economical machining long tool life is desirable. Blunting of cutting tool edges hampers its performance. The performance and life of the cutting tools can be improved by surface modifications. The main effect of refractory base coating is to act as a diffusion barrier against the heat generated due to cutting action. The coating is extremely hard and abrasion resistant and therefore not easily removed.
Such a coating reduces the temperature generated in the cutting tips by reducing be friction and thereby reducing the cutting forces which occur on the rake face as the chip moves over it in the present investigation microstructure characterization of coating on hard metal insert has been carried out through optical microscopy. The microstructure of matrices was examined. The morphology of coatings grown by Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology at different processing conditions has been studied. The performance of the coating on carbide cutting tool was evaluated by interrupted machining test.
